Board

The board of directors is comprised of five individuals, one of whom is a Huu-ay-aht citizen.  Based on their varied backgrounds and life experience, each director offers a unique perspective and contribution to the board.

The board is responsible for overseeing management of the business operations and setting the strategic priorities for the group of businesses.

Our Board Members

Calum Matthews

Calum Matthews is a tourism and sustainability leader with over a decade of experience strengthening visitor economies across Vancouver Island and British Columbia. As President of 4EVER Strategies Inc., he leads strategic planning and sustainability initiatives that connect economic growth with environmental and social responsibility. His previous roles with 4VI and the Island Coastal Economic Trust highlight his expertise in destination development, governance, and partnership building. Passionate about Indigenous tourism and community prosperity, Calum brings strategic insight to his role on the HGB Board.

Diane Nicholls

Diane Nicholls is a senior executive and sustainability expert with more than 30 years of leadership in natural resource management, corporate governance, and global operations. As Senior Vice President of Global Sustainability and Operations at Drax Group, she leads environmental and governance initiatives across North America, Europe, and Asia. Formerly British Columbia’s Chief Forester and Assistant Deputy Minister, Diane has championed reconciliation, climate action, and sustainable resource use. A Chartered Director and Registered Professional Forester, she has been recognized as a Distinguished Forester and Climate Change Innovator.

Kerry Mehaffey

Kerry Mehaffey, MSc, is a seasoned executive specializing in Indigenous business, governance, and economic development. With nearly two decades of progressive leadership experience, he has served as Chief Executive Officer of the Lil’wat Business Group and Chief Administrative Officer of the Lil’wat Nation, overseeing multimillion-dollar budgets and large multidisciplinary teams. Kerry’s work spans forestry, land development, tourism, and intergovernmental relations, where he has advanced economic reconciliation and sustainable community growth. He holds a Master’s in Public Policy and Management and executive education from UBC Sauder and Harvard Business School.

Larry Johnson

Larry Johnson brings over 30 years of leadership, governance, and negotiation experience to the Huu-ay-aht Group of Businesses. He currently serves as President of the Nuu-chah-nulth Seafood Development Corporation and Chair of the Maa-nulth Fisheries Committee. Larry’s deep understanding of Indigenous governance and fisheries management, combined with his extensive industry relationships, has been instrumental in advancing Nation-led economic success. His longstanding commitment to Huu-ay-aht prosperity continues to guide his contributions as a dedicated member of the HGB Board.

Rick Schafer

Rick Shafer is a project management and economic development professional with more than 35 years of experience delivering infrastructure, environmental, and community projects across British Columbia. He has worked extensively with Nuu-chah-nulth and other First Nations on hydro, water, and land development initiatives. Rick previously served as Economic Development Officer and Director for the Toquaht Nation and Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (Ucluelet First Nation) Economic Development Corporations, contributing to Nation-led business growth and infrastructure planning. His practical approach and commitment to collaboration continue to support sustainable, community-driven progress.
